The oldest known portraiture of a woman is an approximately 26,000 year old ivory carving discovered in the Czech Republic. Archaeologists are confident the ivory carving is portraiture, as opposed to a carving of an indeterminate person or deity, because it has absolutely individual characteristics. Characteristics include one beautifully engraved eye while the lid comes over and leaves just a slit on the other eye along with a dimple on the chin.
