Island gigantism (also called insular gigantism) is a biological phenomenon wherein the size of an animal on an island increases significantly compared to its relatives on the mainland. The primary theory for this phenomenon is that smaller animals can more easily travel to islands, and by escaping the larger mainland predators who cannot easily follow them, they also escape the evolutionary pressure to remain small and agile.
