So, what are the key factors that have ITDMs prioritizing AI PCs as part of their next refresh? Improved collaboration AI can play a big role in improving online collaboration in the workplace, especially when it comes to videoconferencing. With hybrid working becoming a central part of many companies' day-to-day operations, quality collaboration tools can keep employees focused, productive, and happy. But delivering the video experience workforces need to thrive can also be a challenge for older PCs. IDC believes that AI-optimized collaboration tools running locally on AI PCs can meet the needs of organizations without sacrificing the battery life and overall performance employees are used to. This promises to be a boon, according to one ITDM in the medical field who spoke with IDC. "We do a lot of collaboration, a lot of calls, a lot of video, and not only for calls amongst ourselves, but with clients and customers," they said. "We also do training. Quite often, we train surgeons on our medical devices and things like that. So, it would be compelling." Stronger security Many organizations are experimenting with AI-powered solutions across their business, with 83% of respondents saying they are testing out services like Microsoft Copilot and Chat GPT. However, most organizations still rely heavily on the cloud to power these experiences, and security remains a top concern for ITDMs. "In healthcare, privacy and security are extremely important because we're dealing with patient's confidential health information," one surveyed ITDM told IDC. "I think that's also one of the reasons that if you can do the computing at the edge, that means less data is submitted in the cloud, so less vulnerability for any security risk." With AI PCs powering their fleets, IDC says that businesses can run more of those AI workloads locally, requiring fewer trips to the cloud and minimizing the amount of sensitive data sent outside the corporate firewall. Greater efficiency While AI already helps employees save time and improve the quality of their work as they carry out tasks like drafting memos, generating reports, and analyzing data, the cost of AI can still be a burden for many organizations. This is why, according to IDC, more ITDMs are considering AI PCs to help them run more AI workloads locally while lessening their reliance on costly cloud services. "The challenge companies have with Generative AI is that most of the compute is not on the local PC, but on the servers within the data center. This latency impacts productivity, and security can also be impacted," one ITDM told IDC. "So, I think in the future, that's something we are going to aggressively look at as we buy our next generation of laptops and desktops." Another ITDM in the financial sector also expressed concern over the growing energy costs associated with cloud-based AI solutions. "Cloud-based AI-intensive operations churn through a tremendous amount of energy, and I think that's going to become a very big consideration," they told IDC. "As people start to embrace these models, they have to start to think about the actual electric and cooling power that they're going to need."
